Sonya Roman

Sonya Roman is a dedicated public servant with 18 years of experience in emergency communications and leadership. As the Manager of the City of Roanoke 911 Center, she made history as the first African American female to hold this position. She leads with innovation, integrity, and a steadfast commitment to excellence, ensuring the highest standards in emergency response. Under her leadership, the center has achieved five accreditations from the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies (CALEA), a testament to her dedication to operational efficiency and public safety.

Sonya's journey in emergency communications is marked by rapid progression. After becoming a Certified Training Officer and supervisor, she continued advancing, earning credentials that reinforce her leadership expertise. She is a Certified Lean Practitioner from Virginia Tech and holds a Certificate in Leadership from The Batten Leadership Institute at Hollins University, along with a LEAD certification from the Virginia Institute of Government at the University of Virginia. Currently, she is pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Public Administration at Liberty University.

A trailblazer in community engagement, Sonya established the 911 Community Involvement Team to foster stronger connections between emergency services and the public. She is a passionate advocate for equity, training, and excellence in 911 operations, continuously working to elevate the profession.

Beyond her professional achievements, Sonya is deeply committed to mentorship and empowerment. She uplifts women through her church’s REAL Women ministry and her latest initiative, Lunch with Lady, a program dedicated to supporting women overcoming hardship. Through her leadership, both in and outside the workplace, Sonya continues to make a lasting impact on her community.
